In previous posts, we have talked about the importance of understanding what your keywords are for your website and your traffic.  My favorite tool has always been Google AdWords Keyword Tool when it comes to doing my research.  However, we need to discuss some of the mistakes some businesses could be making when one focuses too much on the tools and less about our own suggestions.

Keywords Your Missing In Your SEO Research

When doing research, some often have a core of 10-12 keywords that they focus on primarily.  However, there are many keywords that you could suggest or use on your website and in your content just by considering what your potential customer might type into a search engine to find you as a result.  Its always a great idea to have those core keywords, but make sure you don’t exclude others as a possible match.  Remember: you are entrenched in your profession and your knowledge may deter you from talking your “Customers talk” when referring to your company.

Website Pages Need Their Own Keyword Distinction

Whether you are creating your website or have someone else creating it, be sure that the different pages within your website arent competing with each other.  Each page should be distinct as far as products or services that way those distinct pages can compete with competitors of other companies and not against yourself.  Keywords need to be unique for the different pages on your site.  It certainly takes time, but will be worth it in the short and long run.

Low Search and High Search Volume Keywords

When compiling the keyword list for your site, you want to have a blended strategy.  With tools such as Google Adwords Keyword Tool, they determine which keywords are harder to rank for than others as well as higher search volume than others.  Often times, the anxious “go getter” in us wants to try and rank on the first page for keywords with high competition and high search volume.  There is no doubt that we should all have some of those words in our keyword list.  Don’t forget about the low-hanging fruit, however.  In the beginning, some of the best wins we can have is finding our business or company on the first page of Google for a keyword we are trying to rank for.

For some who aren’t familiar with keyword search, this may come as a confusing blog.  For those of us who are ready to take on SEO with our social media and website efforts will know exactly what this means.  Over the next few weeks, we will be diving in further into SEO.
